I was looking for a heavy duty headlamp for overnight hiking that doesn’t run out of charge quickly. I decided to get the Nitecore NU50.. even though at 146g it is on the heavier side for backpacking. However, with 13 hours runtime at 600 lumens and 38 hours runtime at 100 lumens, I am not worried about running out of charge, even if I get stuck on the trail. I haven’t taken it on a hike yet, but I have used it for some construction work at night, where it worked flawlessly. I also love that it is impact resistant from up to 2 m and waterproof to 2 m (although I haven’t tested either yet). My only complaint is that it takes a little while to get used to and remember the navigation between the different modes. The turbo mode in particular can be a little tricky to activate, as a double-click doesn’t always turn it on.. in turbo mode it also gets quite hot and drains the battery quickly, which is not a problem as it’s only used as an emergency feature. The built-in SOS signal is awesome. The red light comes handy when you don’t want to strain your eyes too much or when walking along a road. The headlamp is comfortable to wear, although it does leave a mark on my skin after extended use. Overall, I am super happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend the NU50 to anyone who is after a well built headtorch with a long battery life.
